Sea container almost empty!
This week, I almost emptied the sea container. I've augmented the web server disks and published lyrics-editor.com!
Monday 29 September
Today, DW worked from the office, and I worked from home. It was a regular Monday. I let the robot vacuum cleaner run while I worked. The robot's map has been off by a couple of degrees since the start. I decided to delete the map of the robot and let it rediscover the ground floor again. I had to position the base station at an angle to the wall to orient the robot straight toward the house. This was a lengthy task that spanned a considerable amount of time. It worked!
Another lengthy task was the phoneme conversion program. It is now in such a good shape that it can run unattended for hours. That is ideal when I work from home.
Tuesday 30 September
Good morning. It is Tuesday, 30 September, and the temperature is 11°C. Yesterday morning, I turned on the phoneme conversion program to process phonemes, and it ran happily throughout the day. It finished the sixth round during dinner. In the evening, I began working on a paper that explains the workings of the phoneme conversion program. I've been questioning myself if I should publish the program, but I think I have more benefits in putting it on GitHub than keeping it for myself. I'm going to finish the paper before going to bed, and you can guess what happened. Indeed, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the paper. What a silly brain I have. We will see how the day progresses and if I have any issues with concentration.
Although it's chilly, it's a lovely autumn day for biking; there's a faint mist hanging over the landscape. I took a picture of the houses along the canal. It would have made for a more beautiful picture if I had brought my DSLR camera, but I didn't have it with me today. That sounds like a plan. On a misty morning, I could go to work extra early, bring the DSLR camera with me, and make beautiful misty images. There is much beauty in nature in the morning that I would like to explore better in the future.
I'm on my way home. It is still a beautiful afternoon slash early evening. It's great to see the phoneme conversion project entering a new phase. It has been a long journey, and I have doubted this was the right way to go, but now I know it was correct. I will make a minimal effort when publishing the program. It may seem counterintuitive to reveal the inner workings of the algorithm. Still, I believe people working on phonemes in the academic world will recognize the power and benefits of the program I created. There is a good chance that papers will be written about this effort, and it may lead to spin-offs of additional research. There are risks associated with publishing it. It is very well possible that someone steals work and makes a paid service to access the data, and I would not like that. So, there are pros and cons; it's hard to say which one is better. One thing that remains, even if someone steals it, is that I did this, and if you're interested, I can tell you how I did it. It is somewhat similar to producing content.
I can see the sun in the treetops, a golden and orange glow. I'm almost home now.
Wednesday 1 October
It was a beautiful autumn day. The sun was shining, and there was no wind at all. I picked pears and apples in the garden to use for our regular smoothie. I worked from home in the morning, and DW had a day off. This day, she did leisurely things.
After lunch, I went to the sea container and started moving things to our barn. I made a support for boards of various sizes. Then I leaned the boards against that support. This way, it was not necessary to block any wall that we still need access to for electricity. I removed a large chunk of the boards we still had in the sea container, but I also cleared the floor of the barn. It was feeling great. The right knee was not feeling great, though, but I managed.
In the evening, a friend came to help me with the web server. The goal was to increase the disk size of the server. The disk had 50 GB of space when we started. This has been the case since I started, but I never realized it. I paid for a 100 GB disk, although I had access to only half of that. I made the situation worse by expanding the disk to 175 GB, but I still only had 50 GB to use, and I was at 96% of that capacity. We started the effort by creating a snapshot. Then we followed the instructions from the company hosting my server, but it did not work. The server crashed. We had to put back the snapshot. Then we tried another route, and it was exciting to see how we gained more and more of the missing disk space. When we ended the effort, the free space was 21% and there is room for several years of blogging and other efforts, such as the lyrics editor site.
Thursday 2 October
It was a beautiful morning. The sun lit up clouds from below. It is always a treat for the eye to see. The sea container is not a treat for the eye. I hope to get rid of it as soon as possible. It served us well, but I am done with it.
Today, both DW and I went to the office. That meant that I was early. I had a great and productive day at work. In the afternoon, it felt as though someone was smoking near the inlet of the building's ventilation system. It wasn't enjoyable. Perhaps I am like the canary in the coal mine regarding tobacco smoke. My nose hurt, and in my chest, I had the feeling of a nicotine high, so I felt a little dizzy when I went home. I'm unsure how to handle this.
The evening I spent aimlessly scrolling through my feeds. It was useless.
Friday 3 October
This morning, there was yet another beautiful sky. I should really do something about getting up earlier and take more photos just for the fun of it. Or should I? If I raise the camera just a little, we don't need to see the sea container.
DW worked from home, and I had a day off. I have been delighted since Wednesday, when the disk space on the web server was upgraded. Today, I decided to use some of my time to look into the Let's Encrypt software, which provides free security certificates.
Currently, I purchase a certificate annually. That allows the website malmgren.nl to be viewed using the HTTPS protocol. If I did not do that, I would have HTTP, but then you would see ugly complaints from the browser about an insecure site, etc. Essentially, the site would be inaccessible. Now that I've registered an additional domain, lyrics-editor, I need to address the certificates challenge.
The first issue was that the disk was full, so I couldn't even start installing things due to a lack of disk space. But that was solved on Wednesday when my friend came and helped me extend the disk. Now the server is at 21% instead of 96%, which is marvelous. I could even start shooting more videos!
Before doing that, I want to explore free certificates on the web server with Let's Encrypt. I made a snapshot, in case I would destroy the server in the process. Let's Encrypt did not like my version of Apache 2 web server software. I tried to upgrade Apache2, but that was not possible. There is always a way to do it, but I want the easy way. My friend said nginx is slightly easier with nginx.
I decided to migrate from Apache2 to nginx. We will see how that goes. I tried this instruction for migrating from Apache 2 to Nginx. At first, it was really easy. Then I got into technicalities. It was frustrating. I stopped working on the website and went outside to clean up the sea container. I got a whole lot done. Then I went into the house and cleaned the chimney. We need to have the chimney cleaned, which should be done annually. I got that done; it was a messy and dirty task.
In the evening, we lit a fire in the woodstove. We watched a Danish movie, Another Round. It was a dark, humorous movie. In Danish movies, you never know if the hero will survive. Actually, in Danish film scripts, the heroes often die in the end. So also in this movie. But I liked the movie.
Saturday 4 October
I woke up really late. I don't think I've slept that long in ages. Merida came to me in bed and purred loudly. When that did not work, she repositioned herself and let her body fall over on me, but apparently, it did not help. I continued sleeping. We had a slow morning as well. I sorted beans when breakfast was over. It became a little art object.
Then it was time to continue with the sea container. In the afternoon, I had 5 objects still in the sea container, one lawn mower, the tiller machine, a car jack, and the two planks I use when I drive the mover in and out of the container.
I had loaded garbage in the small trailer. I went to the recycling station, and the men were grumpy. They did not like that I came so late. I discarded as quickly as possible and left the station without even properly closing the hatch at the back of the trailer. I stopped a few hundred meters away from the station and fastened the hatch.
When I came home, I was tired, and it was time for dinner. After dinner, I continued on the nginx configuration. I got the sites running under nginx! Not only that, but after following the instructions on Let's Encrypt, I also successfully installed the Let's Encrypt certificates not only for this blog but also for the new website www.lyrics-editor.com and the old site www.sunneras.se. This is absolutely fantastic!
I had sea container dust residue in my nose the whole evening. It was not nice. I do think that will go away after a while.
Sunday 5 October
The first thing I did this morning was to clear the area in front of the barn doors. I will build a platform there so that I can drive the lawn mower into the barn. With that, we can get rid of the sea container.
Today we went to the PILs for a visit. FIL had his birthday on 2 October, but since it is challenging to talk to him, DW did not call him, but today we came by and said hello. He is now ninety-seven years old. His talking had improved. He could say short sentences. He was in a good mood. On his birthday, he had gotten salmon, and he absolutely hates fish, so that was a bummer. The chef of the house will arrange a new dinner for him. We had the usual experience that MIL talked quieter and quieter until FIL could no longer hear her, and he signed to us that he had given up trying to listen to her. She then said to him, too loudly, "You cannot hear me, can you not?" not waiting for an answer, and continued to talk more quietly. Then he fell asleep.
I am so happy with the server, the disk size, and the certificates. It feels great. I want to make the lyrics editor more welcoming. Currently, you fall into it, and it can be a little challenging for some to find their way. But that is for next week, I suppose. I've added a welcome message to the page. In the evening, I fixed the autocapitalize issue on iPhone.
I also created a logo for the app. It is kind of a note transforming into a pen, writing a round blob. Then the letter l and e. The l can be misunderstood for an exclamation mark, which is also fine.
There is an issue with creating new sections that I need to address. That is for next week.
Here ends this week's blog. I wrote 2124 words this week. Welcome back next week!
